Voice of Democracy
Grades 9-12

2011-12 Theme “Is There Pride In Serving In Our Military?”


Kelsey Woo, a senior at Harvard-Westlake School was named the 2011 Voice of Democracy 1st-place winner.

Her speech on the theme "Does My Generation Have a Role in America’s Future?" won her a $30,000 college scholarship which she plans to apply toward a degree in journalism, writing, music, classics, and possibly teaching. Kelsey was sponsored by VFW Post 10694 and Ladies Auxiliary in Santa Ana, Calif.

PATRIOTS PEN
6-8TH GRADES


Julia Funk, a 7th grade student at Oakbrook Preparatory in Spartanburg, S.C., was named the 2011 Patriot's Pen 1st place winner.

Her essay on the theme "Does Patriotism Still Matter?" won her a $10,000 savings bond. Julia was sponsored by VFW Post 9539 in Roebuck, S.C.
